All about the Beach

In today’s lesson we talked about the beach. We started the lesson by reading a book from Dr. Seuss series that presented many animals that call beach home. We discussed how sandy beaches were formed over the years and how the sand on the beach is always moving. We introduced the term beach erosion and talked about what causes the beach to erode and who is affected by this process.

For our activity, we went outside and built together some model beaches. Afterwards, we simulated a stormy day on the beach by bobbing a water bottle in the water and measured the erosion that the storm created. Students then worked in groups to build a structure that will slow beach erosion. All groups were successful with their designs!

In the next part of the lesson, we made cute crabs out of paper plates. Students loved this craft. We finished up this lesson by explaining what causes the tides. We used a model to better visualize the effects of the Moon and the Sun on the ocean level. It was a fun lesson!
