Allow us to introduce ourselves…

Today your child began an exciting science program in their classroom offered by Science from Scientists. SfS is a Boston-based, non-profit organization that strives to improve science and technology attitudes and aptitudes. We send real scientists into the classroom during school every other week to teach exciting, fun, and curriculum-relevant science lessons. We will be visiting your child’s classroom every other week throughout the school year. We will bring engaging, informative, and stimulating hands-on lessons with us to supplement the school’s science curriculum.

Your child’s Instructors for this year are:

Dr. Audra Kennedy did her undergraduate work at Boston College and has her doctorate in Anatomy and Neurobiology from the University of Vermont College of Medicine. Her research focused on the enteric nervous system which controls the gastrointestinal system. This is her second year teaching at Pingree. One of her favorite parts of her job is teaching students to love science as much as she does!

Dr. Leighann Sullivan has an undergraduate degree in Biology from Cornell University and a graduate degree in Biochemistry from Rice University. She previously taught at the middle school, high school, and college levels. Dr. Sullivan acknowledges, “The reason I love what I am doing is the joy in seeing the excitement on the students’ faces as they discover something new about science.”

We are both passionate about exposing students to science at an early age and very excited to be working with the students at The Beatrice Wood School!

Today in class we talked all about safety in the science lab. We found that following directions is sometimes more difficult then we think and we wrapped up with an exciting puzzle challenge which taught us how to think like scientists.
