Clasificando árboles (Identifying Trees)

Today we learned how to identify trees using only their leaves, a task that is more complicated than you might think! First, we need to know how the leaves are arranged on the tree, and whether they are simple (one leaf blade per petiole) or complex (more than one leaf blade per petiole). Then we examined the overall shape of the leaf and the edges using a dichotomous key to work our way through the leaf photographs we had in class. Keeping in mind that a leaf’s job is to run the photosynthesis and respiration reactions which provide the tree with its energy, ask your student why some trees have needles for leaves and what the advantages are!
