Coding 101

In today’s lesson, we learned about one of the important tools that computer programmers use: the conditional statement. This is used to make decisions about actions a program should take, depending on whether the condition is true or false. In a computer program, the conditional statement is similar to decision-making processes that people use every day: “IF it is raining, THEN I will take an umbrella when I go outside; or ELSE (if it isn’t raining) I’ll leave my umbrella at home.” Encourage your student to tell you about the conditionals we used in class, and don’t forget to explore the other computer programming ideas listed on the Student Follow-Up activity!

 

Instrucciones Condicionales en Código Fuente

En la clase del día de hoy aprendimos sobre una de las herramientas más importantes que los programadores utilizan: las instrucciones condicionales. Estas se utilizan para tomar decisiones, dependiendo si la condición es verdadera o falsa, sobre las acciones que un programa debe hacer. En un programa computacional, la instrucción condicional es similar al proceso de toma de decisiones que utilizamos las personas en el día a día: “SI está lloviendo, ENTONCES llevaré un paraguas cuando salga; o SINO (si no llueve) dejaré mi paraguas en casa”. Anime a su hija o hijo a que le explique sobre las sentencias condicionales que utilizamos en clase y no se olvide de explorar otras ideas para aprender programación que aparecen listadas en las actividades de seguimiento para los estudiantes.

Lauren earned a Bachelor’s degree with a double major of Biology and Psychology from Clark University, and a Master of Education from the Harvard Graduate School of Education. During her undergraduate years, she worked in a evolutionary neurobiology lab that studied the neural development of annelids (marine worms), with a focus on the sox family of genes.
