Earthworm Dissection – Recycling Matter

Earthworm Dissection – Recycling Matter

Students dissected an earthworm today as a unique investigation into how matter flows in an ecosystem. Students began the dissection by observing the earthworm’s external structures and making predictions about what the internal structures may look like. Once incisions were made, students were able to observe and identify the major structures of the simple, but complete, digestive system (mouth, esophagus, crop, gizzard, intestine, and anus). Students articulated that the earthworm digestive system is linear and how this allows for quick and easy digestion of decaying material. Earthworms were identified as decomposers, organisms responsible for the cycling of matter back into the environment, and their relationship with plants and animals in their ecosystem. Ask your student about earthworm casts and why this waste is so extremely important for the survival of plants and maintaining a healthy ecosystem.
