Fun science year ahead at Glover!

Allow us to introduce ourselves…

Today your child began an exciting science program in their classroom offered by Science from Scientists. SfS is a Boston-based, non-profit organization that strives to improve science and technology attitudes and aptitudes. We send real scientists into the classroom during school every other week to teach exciting, fun, and curriculum-relevant science lessons. We will be visiting your child’s classroom every other week throughout the school year. We will bring engaging, informative, and stimulating hands-on lessons with us to supplement the school’s science curriculum.

Students at the Glover school will work with 3 female scientists, all of whom have a Ph.D. in neuroscience. Dr. Sandra Pearl’s research involved using animal models to study novel medications to treat drug addiction. Dr. Elizabeth Bless and Dr. Allison Sahr both use animal models to study obesity and new ways to treat it. The students loved asking us questions about our research and really showed some nice insight in their questions.

In the first week we also did a puzzle with the students, which is shown below. Please ask your child to print it so that they can try the puzzle on you! The idea is that science is like a puzzle and we have pieces of data that we need to make fit together into alogical solution. Sometimes we think we have a certain science topic all figured out and then a new piece of data will appear and make us rethink all of our previous conclusions.

Please check the Classroom Post on our website regularly to read about the science activities that your child is participating in and to view photos from your child’s classroom.

Today the Science From Scientists came to our school. It was really fun! We play a game about over population. Their were fish on a plate and we had to get two to survive and five was the most we could get. The first round every one wanted as much as possible, so we all tried to get five. Every time the time was up the scientist would double the amount of fish on our plate. But since we all went for five their were only enough left for us to survive one more round. So they taught us a lesson and we did much better the second time around. That is what we did in science today.

I love doing science from scientists. I think it’s interesting what you teach us. My favorite experiment we’ve done so far is the camouflage . I hope you come and teach us more soon!
