Gravity

Today in class we used the ideas of some famous physicists, Isaac Newton and Albert Einstein, to do some experiments with gravity! We used a model called a gravity well to see how planets in orbit around a star behaved. The planets stay in orbit because the force of gravity pulls them toward the star. They don’t fall in, because they’re going fast enough.

We learned that the same force of gravity that keeps the planets in their orbits is what keeps us on the ground, and makes things fall when we drop them. With our gravity wells, we figured out that the things that affect how strong the force of gravity is between two objects are the masses of the objects and the distances between them.

Ask your student about their explorations of gravity today, and see if they tell you about planets, or how the solar system formed, or how to use gravity to help steer a rocket!
