Hairy Situations

Hair Identification!

After an introduction into the structure of hair, each student learned how to prepare a slide with one of their own hairs and they compared their hair, their partner’s hair, and animal hair under a light microscope. Students were able to see the differences between their own hair and that of their classmates.   There were many different colors, curly hair and straight hair, and cuticles that were smooth or rough.  Students also viewed pre-made slides of other animal hair, feathers, and even fish scales.  It was clear to them how hair could be useful to forensic scientists for identification.
