Heart Health

When we go to the doctor, nurses will typically take our vitals at the beginning of our visit. The most common vitals taken include height, weight, blood pressure and heart rate. Often our doctor’s will let us know soon after whether or not these vitals are within healthy ranges and what we can do to make them better. But what do these vitals actually measure and why are they important?

In today’s lesson our young scientists were introduced to the Cardiovascular System and the importance of heart health.  The major components of the system include the heart, blood vessels, blood and systemic organs as the main focus of our discussion. We discussed the measurements our healthcare providers administer in order to determine the health of this system and the physiological components to these measurements.

Students performed activities which included measuring heart rate and blood pressure both manually and with automated machines. Vitals were compared during stages of rest and light periods of exercise. Additional activities included palpating for manual pulses on their own and investigating atherosclerosis in blood vessels using straws of varying sizes to determine how diameter affects fluid velocity.  Students even had the opportunity to assist and listen to a manual blood pressure with their instructors!
