Our heart works hard!

In this week’s lesson we learned about our hearts. First we had a discussion about the shape, size, and location of our hearts. Then we learned about the function of the heart and about the circulation of the blood in our body. In the following activity all students acted as blood cells and circulated among stations that represented various locations inside the body. In this way we all became familiar with the blood circulation.

Afterwards we learned what is a stethoscope and how it is used to listen to the heartbeat. Students then built a simplified version of a stethoscope and tried to listen to their or their friend’s heart. They also compared their hand-made stethoscope to a real one. Using their hand-made as well as real stethoscopes we explored the change in the heartbeat after a physical activity. Then we learned how to take a pulse and students tried to find their own or their friend’s pulse. This was followed by a discussion about how to keep our hearts healthy. At the end of the lesson we read together a book about the heart. We enjoyed the lesson so much!
