How Frog’s Bodies Work

Frog guts are so cool! In lab today we learned about of the anatomy of vertebrate animals, including humans. We donned gloves and goggles and dissected a frog. Although slimy, we explored their external features like the nictitating membrane or third eyelid, the eardrums and nostrils. We looked inside the frog’s mouth and saw that the tongue is attached at the front of the mouth, unlike humans, and their teeth are different too. Frogs only have teeth on their upper jaw and on the roof of their mouth.

We heard lots of popping and cracking when we cut through skin, muscle and bone to open the abdominal cavity. Inside we identified major organs like the heart, liver, stomach, intestines and gall bladder. We also found lots of fat bodies and, in one frog, dark-colored eggs indicating the frog was a female.
