How Mountains Are Formed!!

Intro to Tectonics

Do you know what Earth looked like 300 million years ago? There was a single super continent! Today the students constructed models of Pangea, the supercontinent that existed many, many years ago. They used the fossil record, geology, and information about tectonic plates to construct their models. Once students understood that tectonic plates are responsible for continental drift, they analyzed tectonic plate maps to understand the way they move. Students also explored other phenomena that can occur when tectonic plates move and interact in different ways. Students modeled tectonic plate movement with silly putty and tiles to understand what can result from their movements. Earthquakes, mountain formation, and ocean trenches are all results of tectonic plate movement! Ask your student if the continents are still moving today!
