Macromolecules in our Food

Nutrient Identification: What’s in our Food?

Today in class we learned about the organic compounds (called macromolecules) found in all living organisms. We discussed carbohydrates, fats, and proteins and their importance as nutrients in our food. The foods we eat consist of plant materials or substances derived from animals that are all combinations of these macromolecules.

For our activity, we used indicator solutions including iodine solution, Benedict’s solution, and Biuret solution to test for the presence of starch, sugar, and protein in a variety of snack foods. We also tested for fats using the brown paper test. We learned a lot about the molecules making up the foods we eat every day!
