Investigating Photosynthesis
Following a brief review of photosynthesis and leaf anatomy, students set up several experiments to study the affects of light, carbon dioxide, and temperature on the rate of photosynthesis. Photosynthesis is a process in which plants convert sunlight into usable chemical energy (sugar). Students learned how to measure the rate of photosynthesis indirectly by preparing and using a floating leaf disk procedure to measure oxygen production in spinach leaves. They then used this leaf disk procedure to examine how photosynthesis can be affected by several environmental factors.
