Procedural Thinking – What good instructions can do for you!

Friday we had a great time designing many different types of creations using legos (both big and small) and bristle blocks. The purpose of the activity was to learn how to create and follow clear, ordered plans. The students were very creative when they designed a creation and wrote clear instructions for their partners. Each student then attempted to replicate the creation of their classmate from the written directions provided. At the end of the lesson, the students compared the original creation to those of their partners. Some instructions were better than others but it helped the students better understand the importance of clear and descriptive written directions. We discussed the importance of thinking in a stepwise fashion as this skill is necessary to assemble everything from furniture to lasagna to complex laboratory experiments. We enjoyed watching your children learn and look forward to seeing them in a couple of weeks.
