Rocks, ROCK!

For todays lesson at Ingrid B. Lacy, students accepted the challenge to think like geologists.  The lesson began with a brief introduction to the different ways rocks are formed. as well as the three classifications of rocks: Igneous,Sedimentary and Metamorphic.  We discussed the importance of geology and why it is useful to study rocks.  We talked about volcanoes, fossils, diamonds and the Grand Canyon!

In todays activity, students identified a set of 10 different rocks using a dichotomous key.  Some of the rocks included: Basalt, Halite, Obsidian and Granite.  It was a fun lesson where everyone was able to participate.  The next time you find an interesting rock, see if your student can identify whether it is Igneous, Sedimentary or Metamorphic!
