Allow us to introduce ourselves…
Today your child began an exciting science program in their classroom offered by Science from Scientists. SfS is a Boston-based, non-profit organization that strives to improve science and technology attitudes and aptitudes. We send real scientists into the classroom during school every other week to teach exciting, fun, and curriculum-relevant science lessons. We will be visiting your child’s classroom every other week throughout the school year. We will bring engaging, informative, and stimulating hands-on lessons with us to supplement the school’s science curriculum.
Today, we talked about lab safety and then engaged in a puzzle activity to learn about the nature of science. Hopefully everyone came away from the lesson realizing that while science (and puzzles) can be frustrating at times, it is also incredibly satisfying when you find the answer to a problem (or solve a puzzle) by looking at the pieces in a different way!
This semester, your students will be taught by two instructors: Jenna Conversano (Ms. Jenna) and Dr. Y Nhu Nguten (Ms. Y). Jenna has a background in Ecology and Evolutionary biology, has studied animal behavior in ants and dolphins, and loves teaching science through museums and SfS. Y is a microbiologist, now doing her post-doc in Boston studying V. cholera, a bacteria that can infect and sicken humans, usually through ingestion of infected water. We are both very excited to be teaching the Garfield 5th graders this year!
