Scientific Observation: Mystery Tubes

Today, students got to meet their scientist for the year – Ms. Cortney Wieber! Ms. Cortney has a B.S. in Environmental Biology from Salem State University and a M.S. in Tropical Ecology and Conservation Biology from James Cook University, Queensland, Australia where she studied bats and zoonotic viruses. Students had TONS of questions about animals after that! We started the lesson discussing the importance of safety and being a team. Afterwards we jumped into our fun and mysterious lesson of the day – Mystery Tubes. Students learned today that to become a good scientist, you have to make specific and detailed observations so other people will understand what you have found or tested. We introduced the steps of the Scientific Method and learned how to write a great hypothesis, test it, and rework it until their observations matched their hypothesis.

For our activity, students had to make observations about what was happening in a sealed PVC ‘mystery tube’ without being able to see inside. Once they made their observations and wrote a hypothesis to explain what they observed, they worked in groups to build their own working models of the mystery tube. We finished up by talking about why many types of scientists also use models in their studies to help explain a phenomenon.

This lesson was exciting, challenging and great fun to complete.

The important aspects of writing a procedure is details. If you write A procedure the person doing the procedure follows every step,we learned that in our lesson. You need specific and proper detail in order to make A procedure.

To wright a procedure you have to be specific and clear. If you don’t be specific while writing a procedure the person who is going to read your procedure is not going to understand the steps. You have to have lots of details.

The most important thing about writing a procedure is the details. If you write a procedure you have to be specific. If a person does not know how to d some thing. They will take it a different way than you think.

The important aspects of writing a procedure are to use descriptive language and a good amount of details. Using a good amount of details helps the reader by giving them the right amount of information. If you do not give them enough details the they could do nothing with the procedure a.k.a they could not follow the directions. The details need to include the right order and they need to be easy to understand.

I learned that to be really shearchable because you probably can get the wright observation. It is important to do that and make a educated guess to observe what was inside the tube. This is what I learned about the mystery tube.

The mystery tubes activity was very fun because I put in things that were very hard to guess like a rock that sounded like a cube. My dad and brother guessed by shaking and listening to them. Jadon got one right and dad got one right. It was very hard for them because a lot of them sounded the same. it is easier to make observations by seeing what you are looking at.

To write a procedure you need details. We learned in class that if you don’t have details the thing you want the other person to make will turn out completly different if you aren’t clear . So basically the lesson was to tell us about when you are writing a procedure you have to use details and descriptive words to tell the reader or person who is making what you wrote as a procedure . If you have clear results the reader will turn out with what you had intended .

I learned that the tube was really challenging but, I got a lot of help by Ms.Courtney. She told me that to put something that can hold it and put tape on it. Me and my partner James was really upset that it did not work because the pins and every thing else was falling out.
