Scientists in the classroom!

Allow us to introduce ourselves…

Today your child began an exciting science program in their classroom offered by Science from Scientists. SfS is a Boston-based, non-profit organization that strives to improve science and technology attitudes and aptitudes. We send real scientists into the classroom during school every other week to teach exciting, fun, and curriculum-relevant science lessons. We will be visiting your child’s classroom every other week throughout the school year. We will bring engaging, informative, and stimulating hands-on lessons with us to supplement the school’s science curriculum.

This year, Dr. Maureen Griffin and Mr. Justin Dowd will be the regular instructors for Chandler Magnet, Grade 5. Dr. Griffin earned a Ph.D. in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania in 2003. Dr. Griffin first worked as a staff scientist at SelectX Pharmaceuticals, but joined the staff of Science from Scientists in 2006. It is so much fun to share her excitement about the natural world with budding young scientists!

Justin Dowd received a bachelor’s in physics from Northeastern University in 2014. Mr. Dowd produces educational animated chalk videos. One video won a contest to fly into space aboard an experimental rocket expected to launch in 2016. Justin can’t wait to for students to perform great experiments and experience the fun light bulb moment of understanding a new scientific idea.

Dr. Maureen Griffin

Maureen earned a Ph.D. in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania in 2003. While at Penn, she developed a novel micro-mechanical technique called micropipette peeling to investigate the role of muscle cell adhesion in normal and diseased skeletal muscle cells. After graduating, Maureen worked full time as a post-doctoral researcher and then a staff scientist a SelectX Pharmaceuticals. She joined the teaching staff in 2008 and was excited to be made an executive staff member in 2009. Maureen also continued to consult part time for SelectX until her daughter's birth in 2009; now she is focused on Science from Scientists and, of course, her children. Maureen uses her spare time to read, blog, cook, and renovate her house.
