Teaching Jack a thing or two about the bean stalk!

Mock Science Fair

Today we started working to get a better understanding of what a science fair project entails! We talked about why one might want to do such a project and then moved to the steps involved in putting together a good experiment. We formulated a question: “Under what conditions will a bean seed grow the best?” The class discussed what background information would be useful and potential sources to find such information, what variables might be important, and then formulated a number of hypotheses. Working in pairs, the class will investigate several hypotheses: Will growing in soil with fertilizer be better or no different than growing in regular soil? Will watering every day, or at some other interval matter? Will plants grow at different rates in light or dark conditions? Over the next four weeks, the class will make daily observations and record what they observe between the two conditions. We will then analyze, discuss and graph our results. Stay tuned!!
