The Observation Challenge

The Observation Challenge

Today, students were challenged to improve their observational skills—one of the most important steps of the scientific method. Students learned that humans are curious by nature and that we use our five senses to explore the world around us. Scientists use the steps in the scientific method to find out how to answer our questions about how the world works. Among the set of skills that scientists need are: observing qualities, measuring quantities, sorting/classifying, inferring, predicting, experimenting, and communicating.

In today’s activity, students were given a mystery object for which they had to make both qualitative (descriptions) and quantitative (measurements) observations so that their classmates could guess the identity of the object. They realized how hard it is to make objective and accurate observations and the importance of these for the scientific method. We also talked about how to differentiate observations (facts) from opinions and inferences. Ask your student to teach you about this, and don’t be surprised if they seem more observant!
