Tracking the water

This Friday was all about the earth’s water cycle. First, we learned the vocabulary used for the processes happening during the water cycle. We used these words to describe what’s going on when we made it rain inside a jar. We also set up a mini water cycle in a plastic container and placed it on a sunny spot to see the power of the sun as it drives the water cycle.

Then we played a game in which we tracked one molecule of water as it moves in the water cycle. In the game, students rolled the dice to send the water molecule to different places around the Earth. It was fun to see where it goes. Afterwards, each student created their own water cycle craft on a paper plate. The clouds were from cotton balls, the sun and the ocean were made of sticky felt sheets. Students loved this craft.

At the end of the lesson we discussed what we use water for and concluded that we should spare it since it is so precious. We ended the lesson by observing our mini water cycle. Even though we had it outside for 2 hours only, we were able to see some evaporation and condensation!
