What Does Genetics Have to Do With Blood Type?

Inheritance and Blood Types:  Why We Are Who We Are

Today, we learned about inheritance, with a focus on blood types. Students saw that genes help determine who we are and what we look like. We inherit these genes from our parents and some genes interact in different ways. We focused on how human traits are expressed as being either dominant or recessive and how that is expressed in our phenotype and genotype.  We also discussed the history of genetics and learned about Gregor Mendel’s early genetic discoveries with his investigations of pea plants.

Students were presented with a forensic mystery to solve and worked in groups to type match samples of synthetic blood to determine whether the owners of the blood were related.”
